AI changes the tempo, not the fundamentals
“AI” sits at the top of every threat list right now. If you’re responsible for security somewhere that matters, it can sound like one more thing to keep up with, and a frightening one: self-directed attacks, clever malware, something you can neither see nor stop in time.
The reality is calmer, and more manageable, than the headlines.
What’s actually happening
The clearest read so far comes from the UK’s NCSC. Its conclusion isn’t that AI invents new ways in. It’s that AI makes the existing ways faster, cheaper and larger in scale.
In practice that means three things:
- Known weaknesses get exploited sooner. The gap between a vulnerability becoming public and someone trying it shrinks. NCSC has warned of a coming wave where old, unpatched kit suddenly becomes interesting at scale.
- Phishing gets better. Well-written messages in volume, no longer easy to spot by clumsy wording.
- Reconnaissance gets automated. Attackers map what you expose as systematically as a defender would, for the opposite reason.
The way in is the same as ever: an exposed service that isn’t patched, a leaked password, a flat network an intruder can move around. AI just presses the accelerator.
Why that’s almost good news
If the threat were a genuinely new kind of attack, you’d need a genuinely new kind of defence. Because the way in is the old one, the defence is what you already know. What’s changed is that it’s more urgent, and that neglect is punished faster.
The things that protect you against an AI-assisted attack are broadly the same as against any other:
- Know what you expose, including the systems no one remembers.
- Close the known, exposed weaknesses first — those are exactly what the automation looks for.
- Require more than a password where it matters, and stop sending credentials in clear text inside the network.
- Segment, so one foothold doesn’t become the whole estate.
- Watch it over time, because the surface changes every week.
None of that is new or exciting. That’s precisely why it works.
AI changes the tempo. It doesn’t change the fundamentals — and the fundamentals are still yours to control.
